HISTORY
Beacon Youth and Family Center was founded in 1969 in response to a need within the community. Judge Marvin
Foote of the 18th Judicial District, found the practice of detaining juvenile offenders with adult, often recidivist
offenders, to be detrimental and not conducive to rehabilitation of the youth. To remedy the situation, he created
an organization named Court House, Inc. The centerpiece of this early incarnation of Beacon Center was the
residential treatment program for adolescents.
Forty years and 15,000 teenagers later, Beacon Youth and Family Center bears little resemblance to the original organization with the judicial sounding name. In the decades since Beacon Center’s genesis, our community has grown in population and complexity as has the need for quality mental health treatment. Beacon Center has kept pace with the changes and has evolved from treating teens in a residential setting to including a community program that counsels youth with the input and/or participation of family members. Additionally, a private pay program has been instituted for those in the community seeking mental health counseling on an affordable fee-for-service basis.
Beacon Center has developed new services over the years to respond to the shifting needs of an ever-changing community. Currently, Beacon Center offers:
| • Substance Abuse Assessment |
• Nurturing New Life Classes |
| • Substance Abuse Outpatient Therapy |
• Young Parent Services |
| • DUI Level I and II Classes |
• Early Childhood Consultations. |
| • Aftercare Home-based Therapy |

STAFF
Our staff are caring, compassionate and exceptionally credentialed. Therapists include MA Level Social Workers/Psychologists, Licensed Therapists, Addiction Counselors and consulting Psychologists and Psychiatrists.
Residential care features on-site BA Level Counselors who work one-on-one with youth to guide personalized, appropriate practices on a daily basis. In Community/Home-Based settings, the MA Level Therapist or Addiction Counselor visits with youth in their homes weekly over a four to six-month period to build trust, model social skills, improve communication, goal setting and behaviors designed to help achieve those goals, including parenting skills and preparation for independent living.
Beacon Youth and Family Center is accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA), which sets national standards of care for child and family services organizations. For more information on COA, please visit http://www.coanet.org. Beacon Center is licensed as a Residential Treatment Center, a Residential Child Care Facility and an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program.
